What makes a picture great?

I've had some interesting and inspiring conversations with JS, who is one of this blogs active, if not, the most active reader. The subject was about taking great pictures and trying to achieve x amount every year as a goal. While I don't disagree with this concept and setting goals, here are some of my thoughts on pictures and their relative greatness.

That's interesting about the x pictures per year as a goal. Goal setting in definitely important, but I think it isn't really helping the photographer become what they are or could be. It's a start but every picture, if you stop and think about it, is unique and merits greatness. Who is the judge who can look at someone else's picture and say yes, that is great or no, that isn't great? Photography, like art, comes from within. It's a way of looking at things and appreciating them enough to even 'stop' and consider it worthy of a picture. If at that time you stop, snap and capture. Then it's greatness.
